PTA Tax Calculator 2026-27: Mobile Phone, IMEI, CNIC

This PTA tax calculator estimates what you will pay to register an imported phone on a Pakistani SIM for tax year 2026-27. Enter the phone’s customs value in US$, choose the CNIC (national ID card) or passport route and read off regulatory duty, sales tax, handset levy and income tax. FBR assesses and collects this money, not PTA, so the total here should land close to the payment slip ID (PSID) that DIRBS generates. The rates already include the cuts that took effect on 1 July 2026.

The tax depends on the value FBR assigns to your model, not on the price on your receipt. That value sets the band, and the band sets every other charge, including the jump in sales tax from 18% to 25% above US$ 500. Below the PTA tax calculator you will find both rate tables, six worked examples, the errors DIRBS returns and the steps to check PTA tax by IMEI before you pay.

What Is PTA Tax?

PTA tax is the customs duty and tax charged when you register a phone that was bought abroad or imported outside the normal commercial channel. The name comes from the registration step: PTA runs the Device Identification, Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS), and a phone whose IMEI is not registered loses mobile service. The tax itself is not a PTA fee. In August 2026 a PTA official told the Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Division that PTA does not impose or collect mobile phone taxes.

FBR sets the amount and collects it, so FBR PTA tax and PTA tax FBR describe the same charge as PTA tax on mobile phones. FBR ties the assessment to the phone’s IMEI, and PTA’s registration system does not treat new and used phones differently. The calculator on this page follows FBR’s method: look up the customs value, find the band, add the fixed and percentage charges.

What Makes Up Your PTA Tax

Five charges can appear on a PTA tax assessment: customs duty, regulatory duty, sales tax, the handset levy and section 148 income tax. Three apply to every phone, one applies only to the CNIC route and one is normally zero for smartphones.

The calculator prints each line separately so you can compare it with the breakdown on DIRBS. If one line differs, the usual cause is the customs value or the exchange rate.

Customs duty

Smartphones carry 0% customs duty, so this line is normally zero. A basic phone that fails the tariff’s smartphone test pays a flat Rs 250. The calculator still prints the line so you can match it to the DIRBS breakdown.

Regulatory duty

Regulatory duty is a fixed rupee amount per phone, set by value band. SRO 1064(I)/2026 cut it by about 20% from 1 July 2026, so a phone above US$ 500 now pays Rs 17,600 instead of Rs 22,000. The amount does not grow with the value inside a band.

Sales tax

Sales tax is the only percentage-based charge. It is 18% up to US$ 500 and 25% above it, charged on the customs value plus regulatory duty. The higher rate applies to the whole amount, not just the part over US$ 500.

Handset levy

The mobile handset levy is a one-time amount fixed by seven price brackets. Finance Act 2026 reduced the bracket for phones valued at US$ 101 to 200 from Rs 600 to Rs 200. At the top, phones above US$ 700 pay Rs 16,000.

Income tax (section 148)

Section 148 income tax is charged on the CNIC route only. For 2026-27 it ranges from Rs 100 for phones up to US$ 200 to Rs 11,500 for phones above US$ 500. Finance Act 2026 cut the US$ 101 to 200 amount from Rs 930 to Rs 100.

How to Use the PTA Tax Calculator

This PTA mobile tax calculator needs two facts about your phone and two about how you will register it. Work through the steps in order and the result card updates after each change. Keep your customs paperwork or the phone’s box nearby, because the model name must match what FBR has valued.

  1. Search for your phone by brand and model. The tool fills in the US$ customs value FBR has listed for that model.
  2. If your model is missing, switch to manual entry and type the US$ value from your customs or purchase paperwork.
  3. Check the exchange rate. The default is Rs 280 per US$, and you can overwrite it with the rate on your assessment date.
  4. Choose how you will register: CNIC for a phone you will keep, or passport if you are registering within 60 days of arrival.
  5. Pick the tax year. Leave 2026-27 selected unless you are comparing with the earlier schedule.
  6. Read the total, then open the breakdown to see which band and which sales tax rate were applied.

The breakdown matters more than the total. If sales tax shows 25%, your phone sits above US$ 500, and a lower valuation or a different model could save tens of thousands of rupees. If the income tax line is zero while you chose CNIC, the tool could not find a value for your model and you should enter one by hand.

Very new phones may not yet be on FBR’s valuation list. The tool then asks for the customs value from your documents. The DIRBS PSID is always the final amount.

Why Use This PTA Tax Calculator

The tool is free and needs no account or CNIC to run an estimate. You search phones by brand and model, the 2026-27 schedule is the default, and each charge prints on its own line. That breakdown lets you compare the result with your DIRBS assessment line by line.

How PTA Tax Is Calculated on a Mobile Phone

PTA tax is calculated in three steps. Convert the US$ customs value to rupees, find the band that value falls into, then add the fixed charges and the percentage-based sales tax.

Two details change the result more than anything else. The first is the customs value, which comes from FBR and not from your receipt. The second is the band edge at US$ 500, where the sales tax rate changes.

The value the PTA tax calculator uses, not the price you paid

FBR taxes a phone on its customs value, published in valuation rulings for each model. A phone you bought on sale for US$ 450 is still taxed on the listed value if the ruling says US$ 600. The calculator’s model search fills in this listed value for you.

Used and refurbished phones are valued separately by the Directorate General of Customs Valuation in Karachi. In January 2026 it set lower values for them, but an April 2026 ruling replaced these and raised values by up to 175% on many models. The ruling applies to used and older phones imported in commercial quantity, and models it does not list are assessed case by case under the Customs Act. Anyone who disagrees with a valuation can petition the same office within 30 days of the notification.

The PTA tax calculator formula

Passport route: regulatory duty + ((customs value in rupees + regulatory duty) × sales tax rate) + handset levy. CNIC route: the same total plus section 148 income tax. Customs value in rupees is the US$ value multiplied by the exchange rate.

For a phone valued at US$ 600 at Rs 280, the value is Rs 168,000. Adding regulatory duty of Rs 17,600 gives Rs 185,600, and sales tax at 25% is Rs 46,400. Add the duty and the levy of Rs 8,000 and the passport total is Rs 72,000. The CNIC total adds Rs 11,500 and reaches Rs 83,500.

PTA Tax Calculator Rates by Phone Value, 2026-27 and 2025-26

PTA tax follows two fixed schedules: the 2026-27 amounts that apply from 1 July 2026, and the 2025-26 amounts in SRO 1152(I)/2025 for phones assessed earlier. The tables below list the value band in US$, the fixed charges in rupees and the sales tax rate. Income tax applies on the CNIC route only.

Take the band from the US$ value, not the rupee value. Customs values are listed in whole dollars, so every phone falls in exactly one band.

Tax year 2026-27

These amounts apply to phones assessed from 1 July 2026. Regulatory duty, sales tax and the levy apply on both routes, and the last column is added on the CNIC route only.

What changed from 1 July 2026

Breakdown of PTA tax components by value band, 2026-27.

Regulatory duty fell by 20% in every band, from Rs 22,000 to Rs 17,600 at the top and from Rs 3,000 to Rs 2,400 in the US$ 31 to 100 band. The Finance Act 2026 also cut two charges in the US$ 101 to 200 band. The handset levy fell from Rs 600 to Rs 200, and CNIC income tax fell from Rs 930 to Rs 100. Sales tax rates did not change, and the 18% to 25% step at US$ 500 is still in force.

The relief is largest in rupees for flagships, but the percentage saving is largest for mid-range phones. A US$ 124 phone pays about 14% less on the passport route and 18% less on the CNIC route, while a US$ 600 phone pays about 7% and 6% less. Reports in June 2026 that PTA taxes had been abolished were wrong: every charge above remains in place.

The US$ 500 cliff in the PTA tax calculator

Sales tax moves from 18% to 25% on the whole value once a phone passes US$ 500. A phone valued at US$ 500 pays Rs 43,360 on the passport route, while one valued at US$ 501 pays Rs 65,070. That is Rs 21,710 more for one extra dollar of value.

PTA tax payable by phone value for 2026-27, showing a jump of Rs 21,710 at US$ 500.

If your phone sits just above the line, check the valuation list for a cheaper storage variant or an older model. Do not change the value in the calculator to dodge the band: DIRBS uses FBR’s figure and the PSID will not match.

CNIC, Passport and Filer Status

The CNIC route is for phones you will keep in Pakistan. It carries section 148 income tax, and the registration can also attract a fine under the customs registration order. The fine amount is not published, so the calculator does not add it and the result card warns that the CNIC total is a minimum.

The passport route suits visitors and returning overseas Pakistanis who register within 60 days of arrival. It carries no income tax. Travelling abroad and returning does not restart the 60 days.

Filer status has a smaller effect than many guides suggest. Regulatory duty, sales tax and the handset levy are identical for filers and non-filers, and the 2026-27 section 148 schedule lists one amount per band. Some pages claim a non-filer surcharge but do not cite a clause, so confirm your Active Taxpayer List (ATL) status with FBR and treat the PSID as final.

Free Registration for Overseas Visitors

Overseas Pakistanis and foreign visitors can register one device on the DIRBS portal for up to 120 days of use without paying PTA tax. PTA introduced temporary registration in April 2025 and followed it with the tax-free 120-day option. You enter your entry date, address and passport details, and Pakistanis also supply their CNIC.

The 120 days run from your arrival and apply per visit. After that period the phone needs a normal tax-paid registration to stay connected. Dual-SIM phones qualify, but reports describe a limit of one device on the temporary route.

Pay PTA Tax in Instalments

The Finance Act 2026 took effect on 1 July 2026 and lets individuals pay tax on an imported phone in instalments. FBR Circular No. 1 of 2026, dated 11 September, reportedly covers sales tax only and requires payment before the financial year ends. The instalment count is unannounced, and DIRBS showed no instalment option on 17 September 2026.

Treat any message that offers a DIRBS instalment link as suspect. On 3 July 2026 PTA rejected a notification about instalments as fake and said FBR handles assessment, levy and collection. Until DIRBS offers an instalment option, pay the full PSID amount within its validity window.

What Happens If You Do Not Pay PTA Tax

A phone that stays unregistered loses cellular service after the grace period. If you insert a SIM and do not register within 60 days, DIRBS suspends mobile data and calls, although Wi-Fi keeps working. The IMEI then shows as non-compliant or blocked in the 8484 and Device Verification System (DVS) app checks.

Paying later does not remove the tax. You still register and pay against a fresh PSID, and an expired one means starting again. Follow PTA’s unblocking steps for a blocked IMEI and ignore anyone who offers a faster unblock for a fee.

Check PTA Tax by IMEI

You can check PTA tax by IMEI online or by SMS in three ways. Send the 15-digit International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) to 8484 from a local SIM, use the PTA DVS app, or enter the IMEI on the DIRBS site. Dial *#06# to read the IMEI, and note that dual-SIM phones have two.

The result tells you whether the phone is compliant, non-compliant or blocked, which is the quickest way to check PTA tax by IMEI online before you pay anything. Run the check before buying a used imported phone, because a non-compliant one can lose service and the registration cost falls on you. For the PTA tax check online steps and what each status means, see our PTA IMEI check guide.

Register Your Phone and Pay PTA Tax Online

To register, open the DIRBS portal, enter your IMEI and details, generate the PSID and pay it through a bank, wallet or 1Link channel. Keep the receipt until the IMEI shows as compliant. The documents, steps and fixes for failed payments are in the PTA mobile registration guide.

PTA Tax on Popular Phones

The PTA tax for a specific model, such as iPhone 15 Pro Max or Galaxy S25 Ultra, is on its own page with one table per series and both routes. It also covers the used-phone valuations revised in April 2026. See the iPhone PTA tax list for the current numbers by model.

PTA Tax Calculator Worked Examples

Six examples follow, each computed at Rs 280 per US$ for 2026-27 with the PTA tax calculator formula, charging sales tax on the value plus regulatory duty. The customs values are illustrative and match the figures used by published reference calculators, so replace them with the value FBR lists for your own model.

Examples 3 and 4 sit on either side of the US$ 500 line and are the most useful pair to read together. Example 6 shows what the 1 July 2026 cuts are worth on a single phone.

PTA Tax Calculator Example 1: entry-level phone, US$ 124

A Redmi Note 12 class phone with a customs value of US$ 124 is Rs 34,720. Sales tax at 18% is Rs 7,330, regulatory duty is Rs 6,000 and the levy is Rs 200. The passport total is Rs 13,530 and the CNIC total, with Rs 100 income tax, is Rs 13,630.

The tax is about 39% of the phone’s customs value. The route barely matters at this level because section 148 adds only Rs 100.

PTA Tax Calculator Example 2: mid-range phone, US$ 281

A Galaxy A54 class phone valued at US$ 281 is Rs 78,680. Sales tax at 18% is Rs 15,746, regulatory duty is Rs 8,800 and the levy is Rs 1,800. The passport total is Rs 26,346 and the CNIC total, with Rs 970 income tax, is Rs 27,316.

The rate is about 33% of value. Fixed charges are small compared with the value at this level, so the effective rate drops from Example 1.

PTA Tax Calculator Example 3: just under the line, US$ 490

An iPhone 14 class phone valued at US$ 490 is Rs 137,200. Sales tax at 18% is Rs 26,856, regulatory duty is Rs 12,000 and the levy is Rs 4,000. The passport total is Rs 42,856 and the CNIC total, with Rs 5,000 income tax, is Rs 47,856.

Here the passport route saves a qualifying visitor Rs 5,000. The phone is still on the 18% rate, which is why its total is far below the next example. At about 31% of value it has the lowest effective rate in the set.

PTA Tax Calculator Example 4: just over the line, US$ 600

An iPhone 15 class phone valued at US$ 600 is Rs 168,000. Sales tax at 25% is Rs 46,400, regulatory duty is Rs 17,600 and the levy is Rs 8,000. The passport total is Rs 72,000 and the CNIC total, with Rs 11,500 income tax, is Rs 83,500.

This phone costs Rs 29,144 more than Example 3 on the passport route, although its value is only US$ 110 higher. About 43% of its customs value goes to tax, the highest effective rate among the 2026-27 examples.

PTA Tax Calculator Example 5: flagship, US$ 1,070

An iPhone 16 Pro Max class phone valued at US$ 1,070 is Rs 299,600. Sales tax at 25% is Rs 79,300, regulatory duty is Rs 17,600 and the levy is Rs 16,000. The passport total is Rs 112,900 and the CNIC total, with Rs 11,500 income tax, is Rs 124,400.

The effective rate falls back to about 38% because the fixed charges are spread over a larger value. Above US$ 700 only sales tax grows with the value.

PTA Tax Calculator Example 6: 2025-26 against 2026-27, US$ 600

The same US$ 600 phone under the 2025-26 schedule paid Rs 22,000 regulatory duty, so the passport total was Rs 77,500 and the CNIC total was Rs 89,000. Under 2026-27 the totals are Rs 72,000 and Rs 83,500, a saving of Rs 5,500 on either route.

If you bought a phone in the previous tax year and have not registered it yet, the date of assessment decides which schedule applies. Run the calculator on both years before you pay.

Summary of the Six PTA Tax Calculator Examples

The table puts the results side by side. The effective rate peaks just above US$ 500, then eases as the fixed charges are spread across a larger value.

Code Snippets: Embedding the PTA Tax Calculator

Developers embedding the PTA tax calculator can reuse the logic below. The function mirrors the schedules in the tables and runs entirely in the browser, so no phone data leaves the visitor’s device. Keep the band table in a separate data file so a mid-year rate change needs one edit, not a code release.

The first snippet computes the total for either tax year and route. The second validates a 15-digit IMEI with the Luhn check before any lookup is attempted.

Security and Privacy When You Use the PTA Tax Calculator

The only official places to pay and check are the PTA DIRBS portal at dirbs.pta.gov.pk, the DVS app and the 8484 SMS service. Any site that asks for your CNIC, a one-time password or a card number to show a PTA tax estimate is not offering a calculation. Our calculator needs only a phone model and a rupee rate.

Pay only against the PSID that DIRBS generates for your own IMEI, through a bank, mobile wallet or 1Link channel. PSIDs expire after about 7 days, and an expired PSID means starting the application again. PTA has already disowned a fake instalment notification, so ignore messages that promise a discount, a payment plan or a faster unblocking if you send money first.

For site owners, run the calculator client side, store no IMEI and set a strict Content Security Policy. Validate every input, as in the snippets above, and rate-limit any model-lookup endpoint. Do not log full IMEIs, since the 15-digit number identifies the device.

PTA Tax Calculator Errors and Status Messages

The table covers the messages people meet while using the calculator, checking the IMEI or paying through DIRBS. Most fixes come down to a fresh PSID, a corrected value or the right tax year.

Status words come from the DVS app or the 8484 reply, and the PSID messages come from DIRBS. The calculator’s own errors, such as a missing value, appear in the result card.

PTA Tax Calculator FAQs

These seven questions come from People Also Ask and the related searches around the PTA tax queries. All figures are for tax year 2026-27 unless stated.

Each answer states the rule first and then the figure, so the rupee amounts can be checked against the tables above.

No. The 2026-27 budget lowered regulatory duty by about 20% and cut the handset levy and section 148 amount for the US$ 101 to 200 band, but every charge remains. Reports in June 2026 that PTA taxes were abolished were not true, and the only fully tax-free route is the 120-day temporary registration for overseas visitors.

Send the 15-digit IMEI to 8484, use the PTA DVS app or enter it on the DIRBS site. The result shows whether the phone is compliant, non-compliant or blocked. To see the amount you would pay, enter the model in the calculator above, because the status check reports compliance and not the rupee figure.

FBR taxes the customs value in its valuation rulings, not your receipt. The band depends on that US$ figure, and the band decides regulatory duty, the levy and the sales tax rate. Use the listed value for your model and your assessment-date exchange rate.

Sales tax is 18% up to US$ 500 and 25% above it, applied to the whole amount. A phone valued at US$ 501 pays Rs 21,710 more than one valued at US$ 500 on the passport route. The jump is why a close model comparison is worth doing before you buy.

Passport is cheaper by the section 148 amount, which is Rs 100 to Rs 11,500 depending on the band. Only visitors and overseas Pakistanis who register within 60 days of arrival can use it. Residents keeping the phone use the CNIC route.

The law allows it from 1 July 2026, and FBR Circular No. 1 of 2026 reportedly covers sales tax only, but DIRBS showed no instalment option on 17 September 2026. PTA rejected a circulating instalment notification as fake on 3 July 2026. Pay the full PSID amount until DIRBS offers an instalment option.

Not reliably. FBR set lower values for used phones in January 2026, then raised them by up to 175% in an April 2026 ruling, so a used phone can now pay more than before. PTA’s registration system does not classify a phone as new or used, so the amount follows the valuation FBR links to your IMEI.

Conclusion

A PTA tax calculator is only as good as its inputs: the customs value, the exchange rate, the registration route and the tax year. With 2026-27 rates, three points matter most. Regulatory duty is down about 20%, the US$ 101 to 200 band pays a lower levy and income tax, and sales tax still steps from 18% to 25% at US$ 500. Run the phone through the PTA tax calculator, check the breakdown, then confirm the figure against the PSID on DIRBS.

Before you pay, check the IMEI, register within 60 days and use only official channels. For model-specific numbers, see the iPhone PTA tax list, and for the registration steps, see the PTA mobile registration guide. For salary and other taxes, see the Pakistan tax calculator.
